The origin of chocolate can be traced back many centuries, but no one can say for sure where the first cacao trees were found. It is difficult to say, but one would assume that the cacao tree did not only grow in one region, but in many tropical regions where it was hot and rainy.
In any event, these trees produce pods which contain the beans from which the cacao was made. The ancients boiled these beans in water and made a dark, bitter drink, which they believed made them strong. They were correct in their thinking as the cacao bean – or cocoa as we call it today, is extremely good for us because it contains many nutrients and antioxidants.
When the Spaniards conquered Mexico in 1521 they found that the Aztec Indians were making a drink using the cacao beans. They took this recipe back with them to Spain and it quickly became very popular amongst the people.
From Spain the recipe of this drink spread to other countries in Europe and quickly became popular there. Many people began experimenting with the cacao beans and somehow they began to sweeten the bitter cacao and found it to be a most delicious substance. This was probably the origin of chocolate.
Once the cacao beans reached America, the American people never looked back. Many families began experimenting with the making chocolates. The origin of chocolate making can be traced back to these manufacturers to this day. Manufacturers came and went through the years, but it is interesting to note that there are still companies producing chocolates that have been doing so for many decades.
